No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in national works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
