Users Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
